Great work. I love that you used all these 8 bit games. Visually, they're every bit is a powerful as today's hyper-threaded mega-polycount 3d jobbies. My only very minor quibble is the transition effects you used to bring in the quotations. I found them distracting. But that doesn't change a thing - I loved it, I thought it was hilarious and engaging.

Odd how irony can upset people though, isn't it?

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

secret sega master system snail maze game FTW!!!!!!!!

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

Existential quotes are fun, and are just about the only that cheer me up these days. For people that are just too, I don't know, something or other for philoshophy especially that of the last century, cool, have fun with that brand of idiocy. As for me I still remember the secret game embeded on the Master System board, and just knowing that is was there makes me happy to this day. I wish there was more hidden crap in games that made is worthwhile somehow, I would like to believe there is more depth to these worlds than the thin verneer spread within them. The thought of it makes me happy, and i will probably never see them either...

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

Wow man, that's some deep shit...And I just wanted to make people laugh!

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

If the floating man is a symbol of the everyman, I don't believe it is such a nihilistic. From his birth, he strives to acquire those balloons, negotiating the perils that appear before him in doing so. Sometimes there are bubbles. He can chase after them at great personal risk. Perhaps he'll capture one, perhaps he won't. Maybe it will end in his demise.
As his life comes to an end in the moments before he is consumed by the star or the sea he can look back on is life and think "You know, I've got a lot of balloons."

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

Thanks for this fantastic mash-up! Some people look for deeper meaning than "get a girlfriend, get married, and work hard" and previously-chewed soundbites like "find a PURPOSE for your life." What you're advocating is a this age's version of thoughtless animalistic existence drenched in an inhuman optimism.

If you don't want to think about those things, then go back to your life and live it how you want--but make no mistake that you're simply avoiding the philosophical issue, not solving it or confronting it in any way.

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

Your life is meaningless not mine. Go search the meaning of your life, GO find a PURPOSE for your life. That is YOUR meaning.

How can you say everybody, like 100%, like people in India and in a small town in Siberia are bored? What is truth for you?
No, I am not bored for example, sorry but your assumption is wrong.

Habits are only means to a Goal, to accomplish your pupose in you life.

Life is full of wonderful children with warm happy smiling faces, that's how I see it.

Loneliness... GO find a Girlfriend.. Not somebody to simulate a porno movie but a REAL girlfriend somebody who cares about you when you feel tired after a hard day of work.

Time does not matter YOU matter man.

GO find a GIRLFRIEND NOW PRONTO will ye!! Then you can marry.

I feel people around me are free so as important as I am to myself they are to me.

I got bored from this movie, it is poorly made, does not have any relationship with videogames.. Why did get posted on Kotaku???

Man stop making bad movies, WORK hard, give LOVE, and go get a GIRLFRIEND. NOW!!!

Re: Balloon Trip: An Existential Journey

Cool, but I think it would be better if you excluded the game sounds. And there was.

Seriously though, the idea that anything can represent existentialism assumes that there is a reality other than an existentialistic one in which to generate the analogy. That is the inherent joke on things which purport to demonstrate existentialism--the very demonstration undermines that which is attempted to be demonstrated.

Also, it would be nice if people stopped assuming "meaninglessness" is the same as "absurd." Camus was no nihilist, thank you very much. (You can keep your Sartre.)
